Patrick Schotanus – The Market Mind Hypothesis

Wed 15 November 2023

We are very proud to support the Market Mind Hypothesis and its proponent Dr Patrick Schotanus — a project going from strength to strength, attracting interest from thinkers and market participants around the world.

The Market Mind Hypothesis is a truly novel theory pushing the frontiers of how we understand markets, filling in the gaps in our thinking about how they behave. The theory is a unique combination of economics, investment theory, cognitive science and philosophy, something that draws hugely, for example, on the theories of Adam Smith and also follows in his tradition of thinking how markets can be harnessed for the good of all. Beguilingly, the theory uses new cognitive scientific insights to argue that the market extends agents’ consciousness collectively as the market mind.

In this session we had both a presentation from Patrick and an interview where we delved into the fascinating discoveries and theories that the project has generated, garnering interest from the likes of hedge fund managers who recognise potential practical tools resulting from it. Importantly, the event also marked the launch of Patrick’s book.

The event took place on 15th November 2023 at the Library of Mistakes, 33A Melville Street, Edinburgh, EH3 7QB.
